Online Music Brainteasers I Love

If you played Wordle when it took over the world a few years ago, you know the feeling — one little daily puzzle, share your score, brag a little, repeat tomorrow. Well, somewhere along the way, the music world got in on this and now there are SO many music brainteasers out there. And let me tell you, these things are pure gold for music therapy.
Whether I'm working with a teen who needs a low-key warm-up activity, an adult mental health client who loves trivia, or an older adult whose face lights up when they recognize a song from their era — these little daily games show up in sessions ALL the time. Plus, they're fun on their own when you just need a brain break with your beverage of choice.
(P.S. if you're looking for a music wordle- I made one! It is low tech... but free! Check it out in the store)
Here are the ones I keep coming back to:
Heardle
The OG music Wordle. You hear the very first second of a song and try to guess what it is. Wrong guess or skip? You get more of the song — up to about 16 seconds. The fewer guesses, the better your score.
The original Heardle was acquired by Spotify and then shut down (rude!), but the format lives on through community-made versions that are honestly just as good. My favorite hub is heardle.info because they have Heardles for every decade (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s) AND for specific genres like K-pop, soul/funk/R&B, country, indie, Disney, musicals, Christmas, and more. SO many options!
I use this with adult and older adult clients constantly — pick the decade they grew up with and watch the recognition light up their face. It's also a sneaky-good intro to music reminiscence work.
Spotle
Spotle is the "guess the artist" version. There's no song clip — instead, you guess artists, and the game tells you how close you are based on things like genre, decade, country, gender, popularity, etc. Sort of like the Wordle-meets-deduction-puzzle vibe.
I love this one for adolescent and adult clients who love music trivia and like to think about music as much as listen to it. It's also great for telehealth — easy to screen share and play together.
Bandle
This is such a cool concept. Instead of giving you the song clip all at once, Bandle layers in the instruments one at a time. First you hear the drums. Then bass. Then guitar. Then vocals. Each layer makes the song easier to recognize, but the goal is to guess with as few layers as possible.
I love this for clients who are musicians or aspiring musicians, because it gets you really paying attention to how songs are built. Great for older adolescents and adults!
Muzify
Muzify is more of a quick-fire music quiz — you have 5 seconds to identify the song. You can pick playlists by artist, decade, or genre, and there's a "Clashes" multiplayer mode if you want to compete with friends.
Great for clients who like fast-paced trivia and a little adrenaline. Also nice for group sessions where you can take turns!
Cuedle
Cuedle (made by Radio.co) lets you pick a decade and try to guess songs as quickly as possible. The simpler interface makes it really approachable — no big learning curve.
I use this one with older clients because you can pick the decade you want and stay in familiar territory. Lots of "Oh I KNOW this one!" moments.
Lyricle
Lyricle is the lyrics version. Instead of hearing the song, you read a line of the lyrics and try to guess what song it's from. They have versions by decade going back to the 70s.
I love this one for songwriting work and for clients who connect to music through words rather than melody. Adults in mental health settings often go for this one — there's something really satisfying about reading a lyric and immediately knowing the song.
Songless
Like Heardle but as an app on your phone (iOS). You get short clips of songs across a bunch of genres, with daily challenges and stats tracking. Nice for clients who'd rather have it on their phone than a website.
A few more music brainteasers to know about:
Musicle — another Spotle-style artist guessing game with a different artist database. Worth playing both!
Swiftle — Heardle but ONLY Taylor Swift songs. For your Swiftie clients (and let's be real, there are a lot of them).
BTS Heardle, Beatles Heardle, and basically [insert artist] Heardle — fan communities have made versions for tons of specific artists. Google your client's favorite artist + "heardle" and you'll probably find one!
Music Trivia: Guess the Songs — app version with hints and lots of categories. Free with in-app purchases.
Spotlefy — a custom Heardle where you can plug in ANY Spotify playlist or artist's catalog and play with that. AMAZING for personalizing to a client's preferred music.
Why I love these for music therapy
These games aren't fancy or specifically designed for therapy, but they work for SO many goals:
Cognition and memory — especially recognition and recall
Reminiscence with older adults (decade-specific Heardles are GOLD)
Engagement and motivation — clients who don't think they like "music activities" will play a game
Social connection in group sessions — competing, helping each other, sharing scores
A low-pressure warm-up when a session needs to ease in
Telehealth-friendly — screen share and play together!
Plus they're free, browser-based, and don't require any setup. My kind of session resource. 😊
That's my running list of music brainteasers! If you have a favorite I missed, send it my way — I'm always looking for more to add to the rotation.
